Meet Garth. His Mum and Dad are both Dental Laboratory Technicians and Garth grew up running around the lab with his sister. Initially resistant to enter into the family business (he wanted to be a builder), he worked with his parents while looking for an apprenticeship.
Then it happened. He began to like the work he was doing and developed an interest in the dental industry.
Garth was apprenticed with his parents business and completed the Diploma of Dental Technology at RMIT. He took a year off study, but has now returned to RMIT to complete an Advanced Diploma in Dental Prosthetics.
"I am enjoying my training, it is so hands-on here and I see patients each week at the Dental Hospital," Garth said.
"Going from playing with wax to consulting patients was challenging. RMIT has prepared me to manage individuals' expectations and provide direction. RMIT teachers are passionate and dedicated to the student's needs."
Garth has aspirations of taking over the family business saying "Dad may semi retire, but he will never stop working".
In 2016, RMIT propose to offer a Certificate III in Dental Laboratory Assistant - Traineeship. Based on Garth and others' experience, the option of a Certificate III entry to the industry would be ideal for individuals before the Apprenticeship program. Garth said "there is definitely a need for trainees in the laboratory environment".
